The cocktail was invented by Count Camillo Negroni, who asked bartender Fosco Scarcelli to make his favorite Americano cocktail more alcoholic by replacing soda with gin. To make the new cocktail look different from its predecessor, Scarcelli garnished it with a slice of orange instead of a lemon.
